Martha M. Verban, 85, Talented seamstress and quilter
Martha M. Verban, (nee Homolya), age 85, of Lorain, died December 24, 2003 at the Amherst Manor Nursing Home following an extended illness. Mrs. Verban was born in Lorain, Ohio on November 17, 1918 and had been a resident of the city for her entire life.During World War II she was employed by the National Tube Company (predecessor to U.S. Steel). She was later employed as a seamstress for the Weitz Brothers Clothing Company of Lorain. She also operated her own cake decorating business out of her residence for more than fifteen years.
She was an active parishioner of Saint John Roman Catholic Church in Lorain where she was a member of the Rosary Society. She was also extremely active in fund raising activities within the parish and devoted many hours of volunteer service to the church’s bingo program.
She was extremely talented seamstress and crafted many of her family’s garments. She was equally gifted as a quilter.
A former member and past president of the Palm Avenue Elementary School P.T.A. she enjoyed travel.
Martha is survived by her husband of sixty-four years: Paul F. Verban, a daughter: Pamela R. Falasco of Amherst, grandchildren: Ernie and Carla Falasco, and great grandchildren: Cassie and Justice Falasco.
She was preceded in death by her parents: Joseph and Rose (nee Stiliha) Homolya, and by brothers: Joseph, Frank, and Peter Homolya.
Visitation will be Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel 3224 Broadway Lorain where the St. John Rosary Society will recite the rosary at 3 p.m. Funeral services will be Monday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by her funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in Saint John Roman Catholic Church Grove Avenue at Homewood Drive in Lorain. The Reverend Thomas Smith, pastor of the church will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery Lorain.
