Thomas J. Zack, 88, WWII Veteran, Phillips Electronics Retiree
Thomas J. Zack (Zajc), age 88, of Richmond Heights, Ohio, died Tuesday, January 6, 2004 at Anchor Lodge Nursing Center in Lorain, following an extended illness.He was born December 10, 1915 in Pleasant Valley, Pennsylvania and has been a resident of Northern Ohio for most of his life.
Mr. Zack was a World War II U.S. Army Veteran who served as a Staff Sergeant in the Philippines. He was attached to an aircraft maintenance division there. He was the recipient of the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with six Bronze Stars.
He was employed as a welder for the Picker X-Ray Corporation of Cleveland; he retired from its success company, Phillips Electronics, in 1980 after a career that spanned more than thirty-five years.
Mr. Zack was avid lover of baseball and was a former member of the Neffs Co-Op baseball team which was regarded as the strongest non-professional baseball team to participate in the Tri-State District. Later interests included golf, league bowling, and vegetable gardening.
He was a parishioner of Saint Paschal Baylon Catholic Church in Highland Heights.
Survivors include his daughters Donna Azok of Amherst Township, and Judith Azok of Pensacola, Florida, grandchildren, Joe Azok, Steven Azok, Billy Azok, and Erin Azok-Rasch, as well as his sister Vera Habzda of Carol Stream, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (nee O’Brosky) in 2003, by his parents Frank and Frances (nee Tomsic) Zajc, brother Frank Zajc, and by his sister Mary Scheibel.
Visitation will be Thursday, January 8, 2004 from 4-8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain, where closing prayers will be offered Friday at 9:15 a.m. A funeral mass will follow at 10:00 a.m. in Saint Joseph Catholic Church, 200 Saint Joseph Drive, Amherst, with the Reverend Lawrence Martello, pastor of the church, officiating.
Family burial services will be observed Saturday in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
