John W. Andrews, 80, WWII Veteran, enjoyed maritime history

John W. Andrews, age 80, of Lorain, died Friday January 9, 2004 at his residence following an illness of one year.

Mr. Andrews was born in Lorain on June 22, 1923 and had been a life-long resident of the city.

Following his graduation from Lorain High School he enlisted in the United States Navy during World War II, he served as a Quartermaster Second Class in the Pacific Theater. He was the recipient of the Philippine Liberation Medal with two Bronze Stars, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Medal with five Bronze Stars, the Navy Unite Commendation Ribbon, and the World War II Victory Medal.

He was employed as a foreman for the Toledo-Lorain-Fairport Company. He retired in 1978 following thirty years of service with the company.

Mr. Andrews was a parishioner of the Catholic Church of Saint Peter in Lorain. His hobbies included maritime history, as well as tracing the origins and lineage of Lake Freighters and ore carriers that sailed the Great Lakes.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Dorothy (nee Siejak), sons John T. “Tim” Andrews of Woodstock, Georgia, Kevin J. Andrews of Louisville, Ohio, and David S. Andrews of Lorain, daughter Lauren Saltis of Amherst, five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents John and Christine (nee Montgomery) Andrews, and a sister Marjorie Andrews.

Please join his family for a memorial mass at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 13, 2004 in the Catholic Church of Saint Peter, 3651 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain. The Reverend Kenneth Wolnowski, pastor of the parish, will preside.

The family suggests that memorials in his memory to either the Saint Peter Parish Endowment Fund, 3651 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain, Ohio 44053 or to the Salvation Army, 2506 Broadway Avenue, Lorain, Ohio 44052.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, Lorain.
