Theodore "Ted" Michaels, 82, Enjoyed global travel and reading
Theodore Ted Michaels, age 82, of Lorain died Monday, January 19, 2004 in the intensive care unit of Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center following a sudden illness.He was born December 18, 1921 in Lorain and had been a resident of the city for most of his life. He graduated from Lorain High School with the Class of 1938-B. He went on to attend Oberlin College receiving his Bachelor’s Degree in Art with a minor in Mathematics in 1943. He then moved to Los Angeles, California where he attended the Shenard Art School. Ted later secured employment with the Northrop Aircraft Corporation and served as a mathematician with that entity until he returned to Lorain in 1947 to join his father in the operation of their family business Michael’s Studio. He later assumed full ownership of the firm.
Mr. Michaels was literally a man of many hats as he assembled an extensive collection of unique and interesting caps. A parishioner of Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Lorain, he was an active member of the church’s choir. A member of the Oberlin Musical Union, he also participated in productions of the Lorain County Workshops Players where he assumed many character roles.
He was a member of the Oberlin College Alumni Association, a member of the Lorain County YMCA, and a member emeritus of the Professional Photographers of American. He also was a member of the Lions International organization for more than sixty years serving in both the Lorain Lions Club and more recently as a member of the Lorain Harbor Lions.
In addition to music and photography, his other interest included global travel, gardening, reading, swimming, and gourmet cooking.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years: Harriet G. (nee Cook), sons: Gregory P. Michaels of San Diego, California and Timothy C. Michaels of San Rafael, California, daughters: Nadya Cole of Lorain, Nancy Mayak of Fremont, Ohio, and Dorothy Dottie Louis of Brunswick, Ohio, along with twelve grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and a sister: Helen Jane Cataldo of Eaton Town, New Jersey.
He was preceded in death by his son: Peter W. Michaels, by a grandson: Michael Landers, and by his parents: Michael J. and Helen (nee Novak) Znoyovsky.
Visitation will be Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel 3224 Broadway Lorain. Funeral services will be Friday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by his funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church 1305 East Erie Avenue Lorain. The Reverend Joseph West, O.F.M. Conv., pastor of the church will officiate. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens Avon.
