Robert D. Elliott, 77, U.S. Navy Veteran

Photo of Robert D. Elliott Robert D. Elliott, 77 of Lorain died on Thursday, January 29, 2004 at Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Ctr. in Lorain, OH following a short illness.

Mr. Elliott was born on March 10, 1926 in Lorain, OH and was a lifelong resident. He was a graduate of Clearview High School. He was a member of the Delaware Avenue United Methodist Church.

He was a US Navy veteran serving during WW II onboard the USS LCS as a fire controlman. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Medal with three stars, Victory Medal, American Area Medal and the Philippine Liberation Medal with one star.

He was appointed to the Lorain Fire Department as a firefighter on November 16, 1951. In 1968, he was assigned duty as a fire prevention/inspector. His expertise in arson investigations was well known and he assisted many other departments throughout Lorain County in arson and bomb investigations. He was promoted to Lieutenant on Oct 17, 1970. He retired on Jul 30, 1976. After his retirement, he was the Director of Safety and Security at St. Joseph's Hospital in Lorain.

Mr. Elliott was an avid shooting enthusiast earning the coveted Master Distinguished Pistol Award while competing in numerous national pistol competitions at Camp Perry Pistol Matches. He was a member of the Sportsman Gun & Reel Club, Lorain Rifle and Pistol Club, National Rifle Association, Amateur Trap Shooting Association, Black River Masonic Lodge # 786, Lorain County Shrine Club, Al Koran, Scottish Rite Valley of Cleveland, Police & Fire Retirees of Ohio, and the National Association of USS LCS Veterans.

He was a gourmet chef, enjoyed bow hunting, fishing and all sports.

Mr. Elliott is survived by his wife of 19 years, Leona R. (nee Kenski) Elliott, daughters, Joyce Elliott Baka of Westlake, Linda Hamann Hadfield of Avon Lake, his stepson Paul L. Urban, of Columbus, OH, 2 grandchildren, brother Jack A. Elliott of Westlake and several nieces and one nephew.

He is preceded in death by his parents Gordon P. and Mildred M. (nee Saunders) Elliott, and his brother Richard G. Elliott.

Friends may call at Schwartz Spence Boyer & Cool Home for Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain, OH, on Sunday, February 1, 2004 from 2-6 pm. Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 2, 2004 at 10:00 am in the Delaware Avenue United Methodist Church, 658 E. Erie Ave., in Lorain, OH with John L. Ferris, pastor of Delaware Avenue United Methodist Church, officiating. The Last Alarm will be given by Lorain Fire Chief Phil Dore.

Robert D. Elliott will be buried at Ridge Hill Memorial Park Cemetery in Amherst Twp., OH with full military honors provided by VFW Post 451of Lorain. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Delaware Avenue United Methodist Church, 658 Erie Ave, Lorain, Ohio 44052.
