Velsetta M. Mertz, 85, Homemaker, enjoyed gardening and crocheting
Velsetta M. Mertz, age 85, of Elyria Township, died on Monday, February 2, 2004 in the coronary care unit of EMH Regional Medical Center in Elyria following a brief illness.She was born July 16, 1918 in Lorain and had been a resident of Elyria Township for the past seventy-five years.
A 1963 graduate of Clearview High School, she was a charter member of Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Elyria Township, a founding member of the church’s Saint Elizabeth Circle, and a life member of it Altar & Rosary Society.
She was a homemaker and caregiver whose interests included vegetable and flower gardening as well as crocheting.
Survivors include her sons: Harlan Hal Mertz of Amherst, and Lynn Mertz of Waukesha, WI; 3 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and her brother: Richard Brady of North Canton.
Mrs. Mertz was preceded in death by her husband: Worth H. Mertz in 1996; by her parents: Patrick and Margaret (nee Bach); daughter-in-law: Kaaren Mertz in 1986; and by a granddaughter: Kristina Mertz in 1969.
Visitation will be Friday from 4-8p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel; 3224 Broadway, Lorain, where a rosary will be recited by the officers and members of Saint Vincent de Paul Altar & Rosary Society at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by her funeral mass at 10 a.m. in Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church; 41295 North Ridge Road in Elyria Township. The Reverend James Ols, pastor of the parish, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
