Mary Mindzak, 94, Enjoyed cooking Slovak food
Mary Mindzak (nee Dzoba), age 94, longtime resident of Lorain County, died Sunday, February 8, 2004 at New Life Hospice Center of Saint Joseph in Lorain following an extended illness.She was born June 4, 1909 in Taylor, Pennsylvania and had moved to Lorain in 1924, where she had lived until moving to the Vineyards at Port Clinton, Ohio in 1998. She returned to the area in October 2003 to reside in the Golden Acres Nursing Home in Amherst.
Mary’s favorite passion was cooking traditional Slovak food. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren especially loved her homemade chicken soup. She worked for many years at Easter and Christmas helping to make nut rolls at St. Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church. She enjoyed crocheting afghans, having her daughters and their families visit her and listening to the Lawrence Welk show on television.
Surviving her are her two daughters: Florence Michaels of Bedford Heights, and Maryann Cowan of Port Clinton; and brother: George Dzoba of Lorain. She was a loving and caring grandmother to Nancy Hebb of Olympia, Washington, Judy Michaels of North Royalton, Ohio, and Scott Cowan of Waukesha, Wisconsin; and a wonderful great-grandmother to Courtney and Cameran Hebb; and Haley and Zack Cowan.
She was preceded in death by her husband: Michael on their 50th wedding anniversary in 1975; parents: William and Mary (Hulay) Dzoba; and brothers: William, John, and Michael Dzoba; and sisters: Anna Yurovich, Susan Kish, Helen Karpinski, and Maragaret Stenjo.
Friends may call Tuesday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway, Lorain where a Parastas service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be Wednesday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by a Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. in St. Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church, 2711 West 40th Street, Lorain. The Reverend Nicholas Rachford, pastor of St. Nicholas Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
