Denver Lee Scalf, 73, U.S. Army Veteran

Denver Lee Scalf, 73, of Lorain, died Thursday, February 19, 2004 at his residence while under the care of New Life Hospice, following a lengthy illness.

Born May 8, 1930 in Mare Creek, Kentucky, he lived in Taylor, Ml before coming to Lorain in 1966.

He was in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953 serving in Korea with the 461 Ordinance Ammo Company. Denver earned the Korean Service Medal with 3 bronze campaign stars, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.

He worked in the Rolling Mill of Loran Works US Steel for 17 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of Full Gospel Tabernacle Church, Lorain, and the United Steel Workers Union Local 1104. He enjoyed whittling wood and walking.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years: Verona (flee Hamilton); sons: James D, and Sam J. Scalf, both of Lorain; daughters: Lenda S. Mussell, Nancy L. Stoutenburgh, and Rita J. Scalf, all of Lorain, Alberta M. Boyer, of Minneapolis, MN, and Barbara Davit, of Lorain; 17 grandchildren, and 20 great grandchildren; a brother: Tommy Scalf of River Rouge, Ml, and a half sister, Marie Blackman, of Chicago, ILL.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Jim Scalf, and Dove (flee Lyons) in 1976; brothers: Junior Scalf, in 1987, and Finest Scalf, in 1964; a sister: Dorothy Scalf, in 1993; and half sisters: Maggie Hall, in 1987, and Daisy Goble.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be Monday at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Rev. Everett Gipson, pastor of Full Gospel Tabernacle Church will officiate. Burial will follow in Resthaven Memory Gardens, Avon.
