Calvin B. Nelson, 83, WWII Veteran, retired from Ford in 1981
Calvin B. Nelson, 83, of Lorain, died Monday, February 23, 2004 at New life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain after a long illness.He was born May 15, 1920 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.
Mr. Nelson was a graduate of the Lorain High School Class of 1943 B. He served with the U.S Army during World War II as a military policeman in the Asiatic Pacific Theater and North Africa. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars and the World War II Victory Medal. Mr. Nelson graduated from Michigan Technical School in 1950 as a certified electrician.
He worked at the Lorain Ford Assembly Plant for 21 � years retiring in 1981. He was also the primary supporter for Edna Kaye’s Steel City Strutters baton group and was known by all group members as the Grump. He also established the Twin Wells Mobile Home Allotment in Lorain.
Mr. Nelson was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lorain, United Auto Workers Local #425 and a past member of the Lorain Masonic Lodge and the Knights of Pythias. He enjoyed crafts, fishing, travel and square dancing.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years Edna (nee Jabbusch); daughters: Mrs. Larry (Edna Jayne) Puca of Sabina, Ohio, Mrs. Len (Kaye) Nickoloff of Vermilion and Mrs. Ken(Callene) Derrick of Lorain; 7 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, brother Leroy Nelson of Sun City West, Arizona and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Fred J. Nelson and Valencia (nee Thorogood) Nelson, brothers Wilfred Nelson and Harland Nelson.
The family will receive friends Friday from 6-9 PM at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain and on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the time of funeral services at 11:00 AM at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 6th St & Washington Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Linwood H. Chamberlain and the Rev. Jimmy Madsen, co-pastors, will officiate. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery' in Lorain.
