Charles Junior "Grandpa Charlie" Lane, 79, Enjoyed motorcycle riding
Charles Junior Grandpa Charlie Lane, 79 years of age, and a resident of Lorain, passed away Sunday, February 29, 2004 at New Life Hospice Residential Center in Lorain following a yearlong illness.He was born February 9, 1925 in Buckhannon, West Virginia where he was raised, lived and married before coming to Amherst in 1950. He moved to Henrietta Township for a short time and has been a resident of Lorain for 30 years.
He served in the US Navy during World War II from September 1943 to March 1946 where he received the Pacific Theater Medal, the European Theater Medal, the American Theater Medal and the Victory Medal. Charles was employed by Lorain Ford Assembly Plant for forty years retiring in 1998 as an industrial truck repairman. He loved motorcycle riding, working on cars, and working.
Survivors include his son Gary T. Lane, Sr. of Lorain; his daughters Sharon Irvin of Lorain and Lora Lane of Vermilion; nine grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; his brother John Dempsey Lane of Buckhannon, West Virginia; and his sisters Carol Jean Hayes of Gains, West Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Janice Lucille Lane (nee Powers) on December 9, 1994; by his daughter Virginia in infancy; by his parents Charles William and Felshia Fern Lane (nee Lee); and by his brother Dayton Lane in 1993.
Friends may call Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hemple Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. from the funeral home. The Rev. Richard Henry, pastor of Amherst Church of the Nazarene, will officiate. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst with military honors by the Lorain VFW Post 451 and the Lorain American Legion Post 30.
