Mathew E. Smole, 71, Former corporal for the US Army
Mathew E. Smole, age 71, of Lorain, died Thursday March 4, 2004 in the intensive care unit of Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center following an extended illness.Mr. Smole was born October 9, 1932 in Lorain and had been a life-long resident of the city.
He was a graduate of Lorain High School and went on to serve as corporal in the United States Army where he fulfilled duty assignments at Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania and Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
He was employed for more than thirty years as a millwright and shipper for the Lorain Works of the United States Steel Corporation; he retired in 1988. Mathew was a parishioner of Ss. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church in Lorain and was also affiliated with the K.S.K.J. Slovenian Fraternal Lodge # 101. He was a member of the United Steelworkers Local #1104, a member of the AFL-CIO, and the National Rifle Association.
Mathew is survived by sisters: Jennie Helton of Lorain, and Anna Wilson of Vermilion; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Mathew and Teresa (nee Zakrajsek) Smole; brother: Frank; and sisters: Rose Corrao, and Mary Becker.
Visitation will be Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel 3224 Broadway Lorain where a parish rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be Monday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by a funeral mass at 10 a.m. in Ss. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church 1705 E. 31st Street Lorain. The Reverend Paul Krajnik, pastor of the parish will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery Lorain where officers and members of Mullen-Murray Post #451 of the Veteran of Foreign Wars will conduct full military honors.
