Elizabeth Mahilo, 81, Accomplished baker and cake decorator

Photo of Elizabeth Mahilo Elizabeth “Betty” Mahilo, (nee Iski), age 81, of Lorain, died Monday, May 10, 2004 at Amherst Manor Nursing Home following an extended illness.

Mrs. Mahilo was born in Woodbridge, New Jersey on March 5, 1923 and had been a resident of Lorain since 1924 coming from New Jersey.

She was a 1941-B graduate of Lorain High School. Betty was employed by General Industries of Elyria for a number of years and later as a waitress for the Aquamarine Restaurant and Resort in Avon Lake, Ohio. She was an accomplished baker as well as a highly skilled cake decorator which led to additional employment at Zemanek’s Party Cakes.

She was a long-time parishioner of the former Saint Michael Byzantine Rite Catholic Church of Lorain where she was an auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary. She was currently a member of the congregation of Saint Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church also of Lorain.

Survivors include her daughter Donna Houston of Sullivan, Ohio, sons, Kenneth and Gary Mahilo of Lorain and Gary Mahilo of Elyria, along with seven grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Harry Mahilo in 2003, her parents John and Mary (nee Trosko) Iski, and by brothers John and Steve Iski.

Visitation will be Thursday from 5-8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain where a parastas service will be observed at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Friday beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by the Divine Liturgy at 11:00 a.m. in Saint Nicholas Byzantine Rite Catholic Church, 2711 West 40th Street, Lorain. The Reverend Nicholas Rachford, pastor of the parish will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
