Julian A. Pijor, 69, Former Lorain County Auditor

Julian A. "Jay" Pijor, age 69, of Lorain, died Friday May 14, 2004 at his residence while under the care of New Life Hospice following a brief illness.

He was born June 12, 1934 in Lorain and was a life-long resident of the city. Mr. Pijor was a 1952 graduate of Lorain High School and went on to attend Nichols State College of L.S.U. (a.k.a Nichols State University) where he studied accounting and economics.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving as an Airman First Class specializing in radio communications; he was attached to the Aircraft Warning and Control Service and fulfilled the majority of his duty assignment in Misawa, Japan during the Korean Conflict. He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.

Following his separation from the military, Mr. Pijor joined the Haliburton Company and was employed as an oil well cementer in the Gulf of Mexico. In 1958 he joined Prazer and Company where he was employed as a bank auditor until 1963. In 1964 he became the Chief Deputy Auditor of Lorain County; he held that position until 1972 when he was elected to the post of Lorain County Auditor. He held that office until his retirement from public office on December 31, 1994.

Jay was a parishioner of the Catholic Church of Saint Peter in Lorain. He was a life member of the Polish American Citizens Club of Lorain, life member of the United Polish Clubs of both Lorain and Elyria, a life member of Mullen-Murray Post # 451 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars - Lorain, a life member of Amvets Post # 47 - Lorain, a member of American Legion Post # 12 of Elyria, and an honorary life member of Italian American Veterans Post # 1 of Lorain He previously served as Past Grand Knight and Financial Secretary of the Knights of Columbus, and was a Fourth Degree member of Knights of Columbus - Francis McManus Assembly as well as a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagle Aerie # 1442 of Amherst. Mr. Pijor also served as Past President of the Northeast Ohio Auditors Association, as Heart Fund Chairman from 1974 -1975, as County Coordinator for the United Way, as a past member of the former Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation Board, as a past member of the former Pioneer Federal Savings and Loan Board of Directors, as well as a past member of the Lorain County Democratic and Executive and Central Committee, as Lorain Democratic Party Treasurer.

He was also an elected member of the Lorain City Charter Commission, and was a member of the Lorain City Schools Bond Oversight Commission of 2002.

His hobbies included golf; bowling, travel, and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of forty-seven years, Mary Lou (nee Rizzo), by sons; Randy J. Pijor residing in Gray, Louisiana, Patrick Pijor of Lorain, Robert Pijor of Amherst, and daughters; Kathy Yun and Judy Miller both of Elyria, sixteen grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and a brother, Stanley residing in Sheffield Lake. He was preceded in death by his parents: Jakub and Mary (nee Tasior) Pijor and a sister; Mary Betzel.

Visitation will be Monday from 2 to 9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel - 3224 Broadway - Lorain. Funeral services will be Tuesday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by the celebration of funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in the Catholic Church of Saint Peter - 3501 Oberlin Avenue - Lorain. The Reverend Kenneth Wolnowski, pastor of the parish will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery - Lorain
