Alex S. Kosztyo, 78, WWII U.S. Army Veteran

Alex S. Kosztyo, Jr., age 78, of Lorain, died Saturday May 15, 2004 at Autumn Aegis Nursing Home in Lorain following an extended illness.

Mr. Kosztyo was born December 9, 1925 in Port Clinton, Ohio and had been a resident of Lorain since 1991 coming from Sandusky.

He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran serving as a Corporal attached to the 48th Military Detachment in the Pacific Theater where he fulfilled duty assignments as a communications specialist. He was the recipient of the World War II Victory Medal as well as the Army Occupation Medal of Japan.

Alex was most recently employed as a security guard for the Universal Clay Products Company of Sandusky. Previously, he had been employed for twenty years by the Matthews Coal Company. He also enjoyed seasonal employment with Cedar Point Amusement Park.

Known as his family's official historian, his hobbies included fishing and baseball.

He is survived by his brother: Richard “Skip” Kosztyo of Lorain; and his companion: Frances Kerlin also of Lorain.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Dorothy (nee Hanman) in 1993; by a brother: Steve; by a sister: Irene Pinks; and by his parents: Alex S. Kosztyo, Sr. and Mary (nee Tomar) Kosztyo.

Funeral services will be Friday at 12:30 p.m. at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery - 10175 Rawiga Road - Rittman, Ohio with full military honors by representatives of the United States Army based at Fort Knox, Kentucky.
