John J. Veroni, 81, WWII Veteran, enjoyed wood working

John J. "Jake" Veroni, 81 of Lorain, died on Wednesday, May 19, 2004 at New Life Hospice Center at St. Joseph in Lorain, OH following a brief illness.

Mr. Veroni was born on June 15, 1922 in Thunder bay Ontario, Canada. He moved to Lorain in 1957. He was a veteran of the Canadian Army during WW II. He received 1939-45 Star, Italy Star, France & German Star, CVSM & CL Awards. Mr. Veroni retired from American Ship Building in 1986. He was a member of the St. Anthony of Padua Church.

He was a past commander of the Canadian Legion Post # 54 in Lorain, the American Legion, the Lorain County Veteran's Council and the Lorain Senior Citizens. He helped organize and was a driving force of the American Ship Building Retirees. He enjoyed building lighthouses, wood working and gardening. He was an enthusiastic sports fan especially hockey. Mr. Veroni at one time was well known for training boxers, having trained several Golden Gloves winners, while living in St. Catherine, Ontario, Canada.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years Florence (nee Plante) Veroni, daughters, Linda Mathewson of Lorain, Catherine Sekletar of Amherst, Terese Veroni of Mansfield, Johnna Lyman of Avon Lake, sons, Joseph Veroni of Lorain, Michael Veroni of Loveland, Thomas Veroni of Fayetteville, NC, and Anthony Veroni of Denver, CO, 13 grandchildren, one great great granddaughter, sisters Dolly Brabant of Ottawa, Canada, Rose Jackson of Wellan, Ontario, Canada and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Veroni is preceded in death by his parents Giovanni and Philomena (nee Cifferelli) Veroni, sisters Donnie Barry, Katie Colosimo, Theresa Sovran, brothers Don Veroni, Tom Veroni, and Tony Veroni.

Friends may call at Schwartz Spence Boyer & Cool Home for Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain, OH, on Friday, May 21, 2004 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A Wake Service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.

Funeral services will be held on May 22, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Lorain, OH, with Rev. Joseph West and Rev. Charles Henkle officiating.

Burial will be private in the Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Avon, Ohio.
