James W. Yakovich, 78, WW II veteran, accounting clerk at US Steel

James W. "Jack" Yakovich, age 78, of Lorain, died Thursday May 20, 2004 at Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center following an illness of four weeks.

Mr. Yakovich was born August 23, 1925 in Marianna, Pennsylvania and had been a resident of Lorain since childhood.

He was a 1943 graduate of Lorain High School. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran serving as a Corporal with the 422nd Infantry Regiment in Europe. He saw extensive battle action in the Ardennes as well as the Rhineland, and also participated in the Baffle of the Bulge. He was the recipient of the American Campaign Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

He was employed as an accounting clerk at United States Steel Corporation's Lorain Cuyahoga Works for more than forty-two years. He retired in 1988.

Jack was a parishioner of Saint John Roman Catholic Church in Lorain and was a social member of Italian-American Veterans Post # 1 also of Lorain. His hobbies included gardening and playing cards.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-five years: Mary (nee Csonka), by daughters: Margaret "Peggi" DeCarlo and Christine Deering both of Lorain, three grandchildren, one great granddaughter, brothers: Mathew Yakovich of Sheffield Village and Joseph Yakovich of Lorain, and a sister Emily Ehrman of Lorain.

He was preceded in death by a great granddaughter: Alexis Deering, by his parents: Anthony and Mary (nee Derezic) Yakovich, and by a sister: Eleanor Waszily.

Visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel - 3224 Broadway - Lorain where a parish rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. by members of the St. John Altar and Rosary Society. Funeral services will be Monday at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral chapel with the Reverend Thomas Smith, pastor of Saint John Roman Catholic Church officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery - Lorain.
