Victor Jones, 75, US Steel retiree, natural musician
Victor "Jarvis" Jones, 75 years of age, and a resident of Lorain passed away Sunday, May 23, 2004 at Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center in Lorain following a lengthy illness.He was born November 10, 1928 in Anchor, Kentucky and raised in Middlesboro, Kentucky. He has been a resident of the Lorain County area since 1951.
He was stationed in Japan with the US Army during the Korean War. He was employed by the U.S. Steel Mill in Lorain for 30 years, retiring in 1985 as a mechanic. Jarvis was a frequent attendee of Christian Life Church of God in Lorain and the Free Pentecostal Church in South Amherst. He loved working on motors, was naturally musical and loved bluegrass music, playing the banjo, fiddle, guitar and mandolin.
Survivors include his sons Victor Jones and Garry Jones, both of Lorain, Christopher Jones of Amherst and Tony Jones of Avon Lake; his daughters Shirley Jones and Jeanette Hatcher, both of Sheffield Lake, Tammy Robinette of Berlin Heights, and Annette Parsons of New Paris, Indiana; eighteen grandchildren; five great grandchildren; his brothers Donald Jones and Ray Jones, both of Lorain, Curtis Jones of Berlin Heights, Ronald Jones of Louisville, Kentucky, and Zearl Jones of Middlesboro, Kentucky; and his sister Sue Tallhammer of Lorain.
He was preceded in death by his wife of forty-three years Mamie Agnes Jones (nee: Hembree) on September 10, 1997; by his son Greg in infancy; by his parents Mitchell and Vestina Jones (nee: Mason); by his brother Virgil Jones; and by his sister Tudy Jones.
Friends may call Wednesday from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services with full military honors by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard will be held Thursday at 11:00 a.m. from the Free Pentecostal Church; 48143 Russia Rd., South Amherst. The Rev. Wallace Justice, pastor of Christian Life Church of God in Lorain, will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst.
