Steve E. Mehallic, 78, WWII Veteran, enjoyed hunting and fishing

Steve Edward Mehallic, 78 years of age, and a resident of South Amherst, passed away Monday, May 31, 2004 at his home following a lengthy illness.

He was born May 8, 1926 in Uniontown, Pennsylvania where he was raised and lived until moving to Lorain in 1949. Lorain was his home until 1960 when he moved to South Amherst. He has been a resident of South Amherst for the past 44 years.

He served in the US Navy during World War II where he received the Pacific Theater Ribbon, the American Theater Ribbon and the Victory Medal. A welder, Steve worked for the Brown Fintube in Elyria for twenty-five years, retiring in 1984. Steve was a member of Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in South Amherst and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-three years, Ann A. Mehallic (nee Plasko), his son Steve F. Mehallic of Mentor, Ohio, his daughters Kathy A. Mehallic and Tracey A. Otero, both of Amherst, three grandchildren, his brothers Joe Mehallic of Alaska and Bob Mehallic of Uniontown, Pennsylvania, and his sisters Mary Cunningham of Lorain and Margaret Tomechko of Uniontown, Pennsylvania.

He was preceded in death by his parents Samuel and Mary Mehallic (nee Rosnock), and by three brothers and one sister.

Friends may call Wednesday, June 2, 2004 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Closing prayers will beheld Thursday at 9:30 a.m. from the Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial will full military honors by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard at 10:00 a.m. at Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 333 South Lake Street, South Amherst. The Rev. Fr. Denis St. Marie, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 43099 North Ridge Road, Elyria, Ohio 44035.
