Joel R. Killean, 42, of Lorain, died Tuesday June 15, 2004 from a drowning accident in Lake Erie.He was born December 30, 1961 in Clinton, Iowa and has resided in Lorain for the past two years moving from Charlotte, North Carolina. He grew up and lived in the Lorain County area most of his life.
Mr. Killean graduated from Avon High School in 1979 where he played football and was on the swim team. He attended the Pennsylvania Institute of Culinary Arts and graduated with a degree in Culinary Arts. He worked as a chef at the Ballantyne Country Club in Charlotte, North Carolina.
He was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Lorain. He enjoyed playing the guitar, writing songs, golfing, cooking, and gardening. He was an avid history buff and enjoyed playing war games such as Risk.
Mr. Killean is survived by hi father Robert Killean of Lorain, sisters Michele Rice of Aurora, Colorado and Shelia Killean of Cleveland, brothers Michael Killean of Guatemala, and Scott Calalbrese of Amherst and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother Mary Lou Killean (nee Sadler) in 2002.
The family will receive friends Monday from 9:00 a.m., until the time of funeral services at 10:30 a.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. A funeral mass will follow Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 1305 E. Erie Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Chuck Henkle, associate pastor, will officiate. Cremation will follow.
