Ventura Marrero, 83, Enjoyed working in the yard, walking, and spending time with his children

Ventura Marrero, 83, of Lorain, died Thursday, June 17, 2004 at Center Ridge Nursing Home, North Ridgeville, following a lengthy illness.

Born July 18, 1920 in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico, he came to Lorain in 1947.

He worked in maintenance of the rolling mill at Lorain Works US Steel for 47 years, retiring in 1982.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain, and the United Steel Workers Union Local 1104.

He enjoyed working in the yard, walking and spending time with his children.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Barbara E. (nee Holland), sons, Jorge M. Smitley, of Suwannee, Georgia, Edward L. Smitley, of Lorain, Ventura Marrero Jr., of Lorain, and Ronnie Marrero, of Lorain, daughters, Janet Marrero Tennant, of Cleveland, Joy Marrero, of North Carolina, Ethel L. N. Madison, of Lorain, Alicia S. Polite, of Walterboro, South Carolina, and Maria Marrero, of Elyria, 18 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren, a brother, Felix Marrero, of New Jersey, and sisters, Sr. Maria Marrero, of New Orleans, Louisiana, and Carmen Marrero, of Mayaguez, Puerto Rico.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Felix Marrero, and Angela (nee Rodriguez) Marrero, his son, Edward Marrero, and a daughter, Helen Marrero.

The family will receive friends on Monday, June 21st, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain, where funeral services will be Tuesday at 8:45 a.m. followed by mass at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Avenue, Lorain. Rev. Fr. James P. Schmitz, pastor of St. Ladislaus Catholic Church, Lorain, and Jose Flores, Deacon of Sacred Heart Chapel, will officiate.

Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp.
