John L. Jones, 80, Retired from Cleveland Quarries, Amherst

John Lewis Jones, 80 years of age, and a resident of Bronston, Kentucky, passed away Friday, June 25, 2004 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset, Kentucky.

He was born January 13, 1924 in Kidder, Kentucky. He was a resident of the Lorain County area for many years before moving to Kentucky.

He retired from the Cleveland Quarry in Amherst. While in Ohio, he was a member of the West Ridge Baptist Church in South Amherst.

Survivors include his wife of fiver years, Stella Jones (nee Jones), his sons Lewis Haden Jones of South Amherst, Larry Jones of Amherst, and William “Bill” Jones of Georgia; his daughters Wanda Phillips of Homerville, Ohio, Shirley Hembree of Lorain and Kathy Williams of Pendleton, Kentucky, his stepsons Jesse Gibson, Junior Gibson, and Russell Gibson, all of Bronston, Kentucky, James Gibson of Somerset, Kentucky, his stepdaughters Rena Silvers of Eubank, Kentucky and Sophia Gibson of Somerset, Kentucky, his brother Toney Jones of Lorain, his sisters Imogene Walls of Somerset, Kentucky, Mae Jones of Monticello, Kentucky, and Opal Crabtree of Indiana, seventeen, grandchildren, and thirty-eight great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of forty-eight years Lela Helen Jones (nee Phillips) on January 7, 1993, by his son Roger Jones in 1974, by his daughter Ina Louise Jones in 1999, by his parents John Greene and Nola Jones, his brother Hubert and Carl Jones, and his sister Lorraine Jones.

Friends may call Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. from the funeral home. The Rev. Carson Fraley, pastor of North Lake Missionary Baptist Church in South Amherst will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst.

Arrangements are being handled by the Hempel Funeral Home.
