Howard Lyon Maegle, 76, Enjoyed trap and skeet shooting competition

Howard Lyon Maegle, 76 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Monday, June 28, 2004 at University Hospitals of Cleveland following a short illness with lung cancer.

He was born March 21, 1928 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he was raised and lived till moving to Amherst in 1941. He graduated from Amherst High School with the class of 1946.

He attended Bowling Green University and Case University. After college, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater aboard the U.S.S. Yosemite. After his military discharge, he traveled extensively throughout the world, supervising the installation of steel rolling mill plants for the Wean United Co. of Youngstown, Ohio, retiring in 1992 after 35 years of service. He enjoyed trap and skeet shooting competition and won many trophies, including the prestigious Hanson trophy. He enjoyed photography, taking slides of interesting subjects throughout the world. He also enjoyed cars and racing in the Midget race car circuit. Howard was an active member and Deacon of the Amherst Congregational United Church of Christ. He was active in the Color Guard and Honor Guard for VFW Post #1662. He was also an Honor Guard for the American Legion Post #118; a long time member of the Amvets Post #22; and a lifetime member of the Al Koran Shriners. He and his wife, Tommie, were also active members of the Senior Citizens of Amherst and enjoyed many trips together.

Survivors include his wife of twenty-five years Tommie R. Maegle (nee Knuckles); his daughters Mrs. Wally (Jane) Gould of Hainetville, Ohio, Mrs. Church (Peggy) Long of Perrysburg, Ohio. Mrs. Mike (Elaine) Zientarski of Amherst, Laura L. Lessiter of Rodeo, California, and Linda Soltesz of North Olmstead; eighteen grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents Howard C. and Paula Maegle (nee Golwitz).

Friends may call Thursday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services with honors by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard will be held Friday at 11 a.m. from the funeral home. The Rev. Attila Szemesi, pastor of the Amherst Congregational United Church of Christ, will officiate. Burial will be in the Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
