John J. Gonos, Sr., 77, WWII U.S. Army Veteran

John J. Gonos, Sr., age 77, of Lorain died Tuesday, July 13, 2004 at the Cleveland Clinic after a brief illness.

He was born October 11, 1926 in Lorain and had been a lifelong area resident.

Mr. Gonos graduated from Lorain High School and served with the U.S. Army during World War II.

He worked at Freuhaul Trailer as a metal finisher for over 15 years and then at Tappan (Smith & Jones). He then worked as a custodian at Bay Village High School for 10 years until his retirement.

He was a member of St. John Catholic Church on Lorain and a past member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Lorain. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and going to flea markets.

John is survived by his wife of 52 years: Virginia (nee Kucharik); daughters: Laurie Zimmerman of Lorain; sons: James Gonos of Lorain and John Gonos, Jr., of Vermilion; 5 grandchildren; brother: Edward Gonos of South Amherst; and sister: Helen Dukich of Solon.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Andrew and Mary (nee Gotch) Gonos; and sister: Ann M. Bober.

The family will receive friends Friday from 4-8 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at 10 a.m. at St. John Catholic Church, 2143 Homewood Dr., Lorain. The Rev. Thomas Smith, pastor, will officiate. Military honors will be conducted by the Disabled American Veterans Louis Paul Proy Chapter #20 of Lorain. Cremation will follow. Burial of the ashes will be held in Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
