James Joseph Horvath, 74, U.S. Navy Veteran
James Joseph Horvath, 74, of Amherst, passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2004 at New Life Hospice Residential Center in Lorain following a brief illness.Born February 13, 1930 in Amherst, he has been a lifetime resident.
Mr. Horvath served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, receiving the Navy Occupational Medal and the Korean Medal. He was employed at B.F. Goodrich in Elyria for forty years, retiring in 1992 as an electrician. James was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst, the American Legion Post #118; the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1662, and the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard. He enjoyed bowling and golfing.
Survivors include his wife of fifty-one years: Phyllis Ruth Horvath (nee Krok); his sons: James Joseph Horvath, II of Amherst, and Michael Matthew Horvath of North Ridgeville; his daughter: Michelle Leuszler of Amherst, Marie Grace Ingold on Elyria, and Betty Ann Duke of Mitchie, Tennessee.
He was preceded in death by his parents: William and Mary Horvath (nee Barko).
Friends may call Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Closing prayers will be held at the funeral on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church; 200 St. Joseph Dr., Amherst. The Rev. Fr. Joseph Werner, associate pastor, will officiate. The Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard will be performing honors. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Amherst.
