Joseph S. Sexstella, 86, Avid bowler, enjoyed playing baseball

Photo of Joseph S. Sexstella Joseph S. Sexstella, age 86, of Lorain, died Tuesday, August 3, 2004 at the Louis Stokes VA Medical Center in Cleveland following a lengthy illness.

He was born on July 1, 1918 in Lorain and has been a lifelong resident of the area.

Joseph was a graduate of Lorain High School Class of 1937 and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He worked as a burner for the American Ship Building Company in Lorain for 38 years.

Mr. Sexstella was a member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church & its Holy Name Society. He was also active with the Boilermakers Union #358 where he held several office positions. He was a member of the United Polish Club in Lorain where he served as Club Secretary for 9 years, the Polish Legion of American Veterans and the Polish American Citizens Club.

He was an avid bowler and was a longtime league secretary at Rebman's Recreation Center in Lorain. He enjoyed playing baseball and following many sports events, especially the Cleveland Indians.

Survivors include his wife, Helen (nee Chihay) Sexstella of Lorain; daughters, Carol Houf of Boiling Springs, PA and Marlene Fitch of Erie, PA; sons, Joe Sexstella of Lorain and Timothy Sexstella of Willoughby; 2 Grandchildren and 5 Great Grandchildren; brothers, Walter, John and Theodore Sexstella, all of Lorain.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Augustine and Mary (nee Jakubowski) Sexstella, a grandson, Bernard W. Pitch III and a brother, Frank Sexstella.

Friends may call on Thursday, August 5, 2004 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Dombrowski-Volak-Riddle Funeral Home, 1939 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain, Ohio where the Holy Name Society will conduct a rosary service at 7 p.m.

Prayers will be said at the funeral home on Friday, August 6, 2004 at 9:30 a.m. followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, W. 15th Street at Lexington Avenue in Lorain. The Reverend Robert J. Glepko, pastor, will be the celebrant. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
