John L. Kurowski, 89, Decorated U.S. Army Air Corp Veteran

Photo of John L. Kurowski John L. Kurowski, age 89, of Lorain, died Tuesday, August 24, 2004 at his home after a lengthy illness.

He was born on November 6, 1914 in Lorain, Ohio, and has been a lifelong resident.

Mr. Kurwoski attended Nativity BVM School and graduated from Lorain High School.

John was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Corp on April 7, 1943. With the rank of Technical Sergeant, he served as an electrical mechanic and flight engineer on B24s. He served with the 764th Bombardment Squadron in Italy. He flew 35 combat missions over Germany, Austria, France, Pianosa, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and Romania from July to December 1944. He received the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and the European Theater ribbon with battle stars.

He worked at U.S. Steel from 1936 to 1971. He was a life-long member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church and its Holy Name Society. In 1987, he was named Holy Name Man of the Year. He was also a member of the United Polish Club and Polish Fisherman. He enjoyed fishing, art painting and watching the Cleveland Indians.

Survivors include his wife: who he married on May 3, 1941, Stephany (nee Tesarek) Kurowski of Lorain; daughter: Marie "Toni" A. Newbert of Lorain; 2 grandchildren and a brother, Henry Kurowski of Lorain.

Preceding him in death were his parents: Konstanty and Wanda Kurowski; sisters: Helen Potsiadly, Veronica Sifling, and Anna Poplar; brothers: Frank, Joseph and Stanley Kurowski.

Friends may call Thursday, August 26, from 4-7 p.m. at the Dombrowski-Volak-Riddle Funeral Home, 1939 Oberlin Avenue, Lorain, Ohio, where the Holy Name Society will conduct a rosary service at 6:30 p.m.

Prayers will be said at the funeral home on Friday, August 27, 2004 at 9:30am followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, West 15th Street at Lexington Avenue in Lorain. The Reverend Robert Glepko, pastor, will be the celebrant.
