Dr. Jean Royal Keller, 87, Advocate of Science and Social Issues

Jean Royal Keller, age 87, died Wednesday, September 1, 2004 at Hearthstone Assisted Living, Lorain.

He was born Dec. 3, 1916 in Akron, OH.

Dr. Keller was a 1934 graduate of North High School in Akron. Following High School he served an apprenticeship in tool and die making at the Mechanical Mold Co. in Akron and later was a foreman at the Chandler Fisher Co. in Cleveland.

He later received a bachelor's degree in Zoology from N.E. Missouri State University (now Truman University) and a doctor's degree from the Kirksville College of Osteopathy and Surgery in Kirksville, Missouri. After a hospital internship, Dr. Keller opened his medical office in Amherst, Ohio and served the area until his retirement in 1982.

He served in the U.S. Army for 3 years during the Second World War and was attached to the 692nd Tank Destroyer Battalion and served one year in combat in Europe.

Dr. Keller is survived by his wife of 61 years: Mildred (nee Kylander) Keller, originally of Akron; and daughters: Cheryl Harkin of Florence, MT, Priscilla Keller of Seattle, WA, and Martha Rogers of Vermilion; 1 granddaughter, 3 grandsons, 2 great granddaughters; sisters: Margaret Mathers of North Royalton, Patricia David of Fullerton, CA and brother, Donald Keller of Stow, OH.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Claude and Alice (nee Hindenach) Keller and sister: Harriet Modory.

Dr. Keller was an advocate of Science and Social Issues for the betterment of mankind. He enjoyed his home workshop, traveling and playing the organ and saxophone.

Friends and family may join in a time of remembrance Saturday from 5-8 p.m. at The Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst, OH 44001. Burial will be held privately at the Crown Hill Memorial Park in Summit County.
