Dorthea (Debbie) P. McDermott, 79, Accomplished seamstress

Dorthea (Debbie) P. McDermott, (nee Pollard), age 79, of Lorain, died Monday, September 6, 2004 at St. John Westshore Hospital, Westlake following complications of Alzheimer's Disease.

Born October 6, 1924 in Trenton, New Jersey, she lived in Buffalo, New York before coming to Lorain in 1953.

She worked as a sales person for The Search store in Elyria for 10 years, retiring in 1992.

Dorthea was a member of Sacred Heart Chapel, Lorain, where she was active in the couple's pre-marriage ministries program for over 18 years. She also served as a Eucharistic Minister, and belonged to the Cursillo Movement where she held leadership roles. She was a member of the Missionary Cenacle Apostolate, an international lay order of the Missionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity organization where she was assistant custodian for 8 years. She was a volunteer for the Lorain County Aids Task Force for many years.

She enjoyed sewing and was known by many as an accomplished seamstress.

Surviving her is her husband of 60 years: William; her daughter; Margaret Sechkar of Wakeman; sons: Michael of Madison, Wisconsin, William of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, Richard of Avon Lake, Matthew of Palo Alto, California, Mark of Cleveland, and Sean of Elyria; a brother: Richard Pollard of Trenton, New Jersey.

She was preceded in death by her son: Dennis in 1992; sisters: Elizabeth Percel, Patricia Rhodes; brothers: William Pollard, Joseph Pollard, and Louis Pollard.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Avenue, Lorain. Rev. Fr. William Thaden, pastor, will officiate.
