George S. Friend, 78, U.S. Army Veteran
George S. Friend, age 78, of Elyria, died Saturday, September 4, 2004 at Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky following a lengthy illness.He was born on November27, 1925 in Gassaway, WV and has lived in the Elyria and Lorain area for the past 52 years.
Mr. Friend was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving as Corporal in the 1771st Labor Supervision Company from 1944-1 946.
He worked as a crane operator for the Pfaulder Company in Elyria, retiring in 1986 after 29 years. He attended the First Christian Church in Amherst and was a collector of antique cars and Army memorabilia.
George is survived by a step-daughter: Nancy L. Bickley of Huron; stepsons: Larry Cunningham of Vermilion and Bill Agy of Phoenix, AR; several grandchildren, step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; brothers: Ancel Friend and Robert Friend, bath of Gassaway, WV.
Preceding him in death was his wife: Mary Elizabeth Friend (nee Dye); daughter: Nannette Yancer; parents: Andrew Pete and Lula Belle (nee Nutter) Friend; brothers: Dennis, Charlie and John Friend; sisters: Myrtle Duncan, Maysel Friend, Muriel Barker and Mary Bernice Cottrill.
Friends may call on Tuesday, September 7, 2004 from 6-8 p.m. at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 8, 2004 at the funeral home. The Reverend Guy Morton, pastor of Lakeview Baptist Church will officiate.
Interment will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery, Vermilion with the Vermilion Veteran's Council providing military honors.
