Edward Scherfling, 87, Private Pilot, conductor

Edward Scherfling, age 87, of Lorain, died on Tuesday, September 14, 2004 at Community Health Partners - West, Lorain, following a lengthy illness.

He was born on August 21, 1917 in Cleveland, moving to Lorain in 1939.

Edward was employed as a conductor for Lake Terminal Railroad at US Steel for 36 years, retiring in 1977. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #552.

A private pilot, Mr. Scherfling owned a number of his own planes including aerobatic planes. He enjoyed league bowling, golfing and traveling.

He is survived by his sons: Dale, of Lorain, and James, of Sun City, AZ; daughter: Linda Smith, of Lorain; 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great granddaughter; and sister: Olga Gabram, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years: Jenny (nee Melia), in 1998; and parents: William and Emily (nee Hopp) Scherfling.

Graveside services will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp. Rev. Kevin Saylor, pastor of Zion Lutheran Church, Lorain, will officiate. The Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain handled the arrangements.
