Robert George Becker Sr., 64, Served in US Army during Vietnam War

Robert George Becker Sr., 64 years of age, and a resident of South Amherst passed away Thursday, September 16, 2004 at Community Health Partners in Lorain following a sudden illness.

He was born July 8, 1940 in South Amherst Ohio where he lived his entire lifetime.

Mr. Becker worked for the Ford Motor Company in Lorain for 47 years, much of that time as a small tool repairman and where he also served as a first respondent ERT for 40 years. He was an usher and active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Amherst where he was baptized. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, during which time he played football with SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Presence in Europe) while stationed in Germany. He served on the South Amherst Fire Department from 1956-2004, recently as Lieutenant Engineer.

Robert was a member of the Amherst Eagles and the South Amherst American Legion Post 197. He was active in helping with the Boy Scouts, an excellent repairman and was an avid sports fan being involved in drag racing with the Wilhelm-Becker racing team and was a fan of NASCAR racing, especially Dale Earnhart.

Survivors include his wife of 36 years: Barbara (nee: King); son: Robert George Becker, Jr. of S. Amherst; daughters: Beth and Penny Becker, both of S. Amherst; two grandchildren; and two sisters, Norma Horning of Oberlin and Joyce Doehne of Elyria.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Edward and Marie (nee Mietzke) Becker; brothers: James LeRoy and George Becker; and a sister: Gladys Rucker.

Friends may call Saturday from 7 - 9 p.m., Sunday from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Monday, September 20 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 115 Central Dr., Amherst Ohio. The Rev. Gary Bernath, pastor of the church will officiate.

Military Honors will be provided by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 115 Central Dr., Amherst, OH 44001.
