Helen J. Mager, 87, Mother and Homemaker

Born October 12, 1916 in Lorain, she was a life long resident here. She graduated from Lorain High School in 1934.
A homemaker since 1950, Helen previously worked at General Industries, Elyria, as an assembler in the early 1940's, then at Bendix Westinghouse, Elyria, as a licensed machine operator, in the mid 1940's, then at Hellman's Restaurant as a waitress until 1950.
Helen was a member of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Byzantine Catholic Church, Lorain, where she was active in the church choir, the church council, and volunteered to work making pyrohy, and cleaned the church's altar linens and the priest's vestments.
She was active in the Parent Teacher Association. She was also a member of the church's Apostleship of Prayer. She was a charter member of the Ukrainian National Home, and a member and former secretary of the Ukrainian National Association Branch 223, holding the office position for 33 years, and stepping down in 1986. A 30 year member of the Lorain Democratic Women's Club, Helen was active holding a position in every office including president, served a 2 year term as trustee, and worked on various committees. Helen also volunteered for the Lorain public school system as a reader, reading to children and helping teach children to read.
Surviving is her sons: Myron "Ron" of Lorain, and John "Jack" of Newbergh, New York, 4 granddaughters, and 1 great granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years: John E. Mager, in 1996; her infant daughter: Sandra Mager; her parents: John Zadorozny and Katherine (nee Kopacz) Zadorozny, her brothers; Harry Zadorozny, Martin Zadorozny, Andrew Zadorozny , Michael Zadorozny , and Peter Zadorozny, and a sister; Mary Martin.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Ave., Lorain, where a Panachida will be conducted at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral home followed by Divine Liturgy at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Byzantine Catholic Church, E. 31st and Charleston Ave., Lorain. Rev. Fr. Steven M. Poliwoda, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
