Frances Popiel, 99, Enjoyed gardening and cooking

Frances Popiel (nee Turton), 99, of Lorain, died Friday January 14, 2005 in the emergency room at Community Health Partners Hospital in Lorain after a lengthy illness.

She was born March 6, 1905 in Lorain and had been a lifelong Lorain area resident.

Mrs. Popiel worked at the former Service Overall Company in Lorain, Lorain Towel Supply and Worthington Bali Company in Elyria.

She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lorain, the church Altar & Rosary Society, Legion of Mary, Women's Guild and St. Anne's Lodge where she was a past president.

Mrs. Popiel enjoyed gardening, cooking, listening to music, spending time with her grandchildren and sitting on her porch in the summer.

She is survived by her sons; Jerome Popiel of Sheffield Village and James Popiel of Lorain, daughters Jean Walder of Pomona, California and Clara Guzik of Avon, brother Edward Turton of Lorain, 25 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband Herman Popiel in 1966, daughter Dorothy Benko in 1988, parents Jacob "James" Turton and Stella (nee Towakowski) Turton, sisters Sophie Schultz, Florence Klingshirn and Harriet Kercbinske and brothers Joseph Turton, Casimer Turton, Andrew Turton and John Turton.

The family will receive friends Monday 2-4; 7-9 PM at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain where the St. Stanislaus Altar & Rosary Society will pray the rosary Monday at 3 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, 2702 Elyria Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Kevin Shemuga, pastor, and the Rev. Mr. William Schill, deacon, will concelebrate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
