Helen Walend, 87, Enjoyed Growing And Cultivating Orchids

Helen Walend, (nee Jurczynski), age 87, of Boynton Beach, Florida, and formerly of Lorain, Elyria, Toledo, and Miami, Florida, died Monday March 14, 2005 at the home of her daughter in Sonoma, California following an extended illness.

Mrs. Walend was born February 22, 1918 in Lorain and had been a resident of Florida since 1957 after moving from residences in Ohio.

A long-time member of the Polish Roman Catholic Union, she was a parishioner of Saint Mark’s Catholic Church in Boynton Beach and was a former parishioner of Saint Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lorain, Ohio.

Her interests included cooking as well as growing and cultivating orchids .

Helen is survived by her sons: Kenneth of Brevard, North Carolina and Thomas of Margate, Florida, a daughter: Cynthia Battershall of Sonoma, California, five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and a brother: Joseph Jurczynski residing in Mulberry, Florida.

She was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-one years: Frank in 2000, by her parents: Joseph and Mary (nee Filipowicz) Jurczynski, by brothers: Stanley Jurczynski, John Philips, Walter Jurczynski, Casimir Jurczynski, Andrew Jurczynski, Theodore Jurczynski, and sisters: Stella Urbanski and Therese Jurczynski.

Visitation will be Sunday, March 20, 2005, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway Avenue – Lorain. Funeral services will be Monday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by the celebration of her funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in Saint Styanislaus Catholic Church – 2702 Elyria Avenue – Lorain. The Reverend Kevin C. Shemuga, pastor of Saint Stanislaus parish, and Reverend Mr. William Schill, permanent deacon of the church will concelebrate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery – Lorain. Though her family will miss Helen’s radiant love for them, they rejoice in knowing that her spirit is released into the realm of grace.

Family suggest memorial contributions be sent to Saint Leo’s Development Fund in care of Saint Leo’s Catholic Church – 601 Agua Caliente Road – Sonoma, California 95476.
