Donald R. McKay, 77, WW II Veteran
Donald R. McKay, 77 of Lorain died on Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at Community Health Partners Hospital & Surgical Center in Lorain, OH following a long illness.Mr. McKay was born on April 12, 1927, in Detroit, MI. He lived in London, Ontario, Canada and then moved to Ashland, Ohio. He was a graduate of Ashland High School Class of 1945. He left high school early and joined the US Navy.
He served during WW II aboard the USS Catoctin in the Pacific. He visited many Chinese ports. He then attended Ashland College. He was employed as a foreman in quality control for General Motors Fisher Guide plant in Elyria. After 37 years of working second shift, he retired in 1986.
Mr. McKay was a member of the American Legion Post # 30 and the Winston Churchill Society. He attended Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Lorain.
He loved gardening, bowling, traveling, and making scrapbooks. He labored for hours preparing jokes and letters to send to friends and loved ones across the nation.
Mr. McKay is survived by his wife Miriam (nee Cowan) McKay, to whom he was married on May 28th, 1949, his three daughters, Cynthia Coyle of Vermilion, OH, Bonnie Glasbrenner of Lorain, Katherine Morales of Macon, GA, sons, Jay McKay and Patrick McKay both of Amherst, 8 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild, brother Jon Shidler of Wilmington, DE and a step brother Robert Shidler.
He is preceded in death by his father Harold McKay, and his step father and mother Jay Harold and Florence Shidler.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 25, 2005, at 11:00 am in Schwartz Spence Boyer & Cool Home for Funerals in Lorain, OH.
Donald R. McKay will be buried at Ridge Hill Memorial Park Cemetery in Amherst Twp., OH, with full military burial honors provided by American Legion Post # 30 and VFW Post # 451.
