Harold Saladin, 83, Air Force Veteran
Harold "Bud" E. Saladin, 83 of Lorain died on Monday, March 28, 2005 at Kingston Of Vermilion in Vermilion, following a long illness.Saladin was born on December 27, 1921 in Elyria, OH but lived in Lorain for the last 57 years.
He graduated from Lorain High School with the class of 1939B. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He won the Northern Ohio Juniors Singles Tennis Title at Lakeside Ohio in 1939. He attended Ohio State University and as a freshman lettered in tennis. He was a member briefly of the Varsity tennis team before enlisting in the United State Air Force. He served as an administrative specialist in the 93rd squadron, 61st troop carrier wing.
Mr. Saladin began working at the Rieth Insurance Agency in 1954; retiring in 1985 as the general manager. In 1979 he received Charter Casualty and Property Underwriter, a professional insurance designation.
He was an avid golfer and charter member of Lorain Country Club. He won the Frank Nardini trophy in 1974. He was also as avid racquetball competitor at both the old and new YMCA. He won the city wide doubles title with Jack Kosman.
Mr. Saladin was a member of the Lorain Rotary since September 1958, served as president 1970 to 1971 and was active on the Rotary Board of Directors. He was best known for his many years as Sergeant at Arms, served on the Lorain Rotary Memorial Fund Board for student college scholarships, grants and loans. He was a distinguished Paul Harris Fellow.
He was a past president of the Lorain Sports Hall of Fame committee, editor of the Banquet program book since 1982 and currently sat on the advisory committee. He served on the Board of the Lorain Chamber of Commerce. As of 1992 he appeared in all but three Lorain Community Hospital Follies presentations. He was a member of the Jaycees, served as President, Umpire and team Coach of the Little League Committee.
Mr. Saladin is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy (nee Ray), son Chad of Lorain and Brooke of Winston Salem, NC, daughters Renee Kershaw of Lorain, Kellie Saladin of Worthington, 4 Grandchildren and 2 Great Grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents Alvin and Mary Ellen (nee Byrne) Saladin and a brother Donald.
