Elmer Helbig, 74, Paint Inspector
Elmer Helbig, age 74, of Lorain, died on Thursday, April 7, 2005 at his residence, while under the care of New Life Hospice, following a short illness.He was born on June 16, 1930 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; he came to Lorain in 1955.
Elmer served in the United States Army in Korea as a sergeant, having received the Korea Medal with 3 bronze stars.
He was employed as a paint inspector for Ford Motor, Avon Lake for 30 years, retiring in 1990. Prior to this he worked at National Tube for 5 years.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Lorain, and the United Auto Workers Union Local 2000. He was a life member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars, Post # 451. Elmer enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, and traveling.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years: Cinderella (nee Hewitt), sons: Elmer Joseph Helbig, of Avon Lake, Gerald Lee Helbig, of Vermilion, daughters: Lora Mae Moore of St. Louis, Missouri, Doris Jean Taylor of Lorain, 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, brothers: David Helbig, of Sebring, Florida, Raymond Helbig, of Pittsburgh, PA, Robert Helbig, of Huron and William Helbig, of Avon Park, Florida, sisters: Frieda Novak, of Washington, PA, and Emma Lapp of Eighty Four, Pennsylvania.
He was preceded in death by his parents: David and Myrtle (nee Kohlmeyer) Helbig and a great-grandchild: Devon Dolinsky.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 10, 2005, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Dovin Funeral Home, 2701 Elyria Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Rev. Jane B. Anderson, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Amherst, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Twp, Ohio.
