Warren Joseph Young, 78, Vice President of Engineering for Freightliner

Photo of Warren Joseph Young Warren Joseph Young, 78 of Lake Oswego, Oregon, died Sunday, May 22, 2005 in St. Luke’s Hospital, Boise, Idaho, after a brief illness.

He was born September 26, 1926 in Cleveland. He and his family lived in Parma Heights and spent the summers in Vermilion. In 1961, he built a cottage in Volunteer Bay with the help of his oldest son. In 1983 he moved to Lake Oswego, Oregon.

After he graduated from Rhodes High School, he served in the United States Navy during WWII as an electrician’s mate. He received a mechanical engineering degree from Ohio University and a master's degree from Cleveland State University.

He worked as a Mechanical Engineer for the White Motor Co/Volvo, in Cleveland. After he retired from Volvo, he accepted a position as Vice President of Engineering for Freightliner, in Portland, Oregon. He was instrumental in the application of the anti-lock braking system ‘ABS’ on heavy commercial trucks in cooperation with WABCO. Mr. Young was a member of the Truck Maintenance Council that sets standards for truck safety. He was involved in training and provided curriculum guidance for the engineering program at Oregon State University. He was active in the Society of Automotive Engineers and was still doing consulting work. In January of 2005, he was honored by Grote Industries for his work with the company.

He was a member of the Parma South Presbyterian Church, in Parma Heights; AMVETS Post 22, in Vermilion; and a member of the Cornerstone Masonic Lodge #699 F& AM & the Scottish Rite in Cleveland. He was also a member of the Alumni Group of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity.

In recent years he took great pleasure in spending time with his young grandsons and traveling with his wife and children. He also enjoyed bicycling and participated in many charity bicycle rides. He had a passion for sports, especially Cleveland teams. He liked bird watching, boating, and walking his dog Spaetzle.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Addie Young (nee Witthuhn); daughter, Kathryn Young of Lansing, MI; sons, Warren Robert Young of Montrose, CO and William G. Young of Eugene, OR; grandsons, Miles, Evan and Joseph Young; and niece Joanne Altimus of Corvalis, OR.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Joseph and Catherine (nee Charvat) Young, and a sister, Gayle.

Friends may call Monday, June 6, 2005, at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, from 1 p.m. until the time of a service at 3 p.m.

Interment will be held Tuesday, June 7 at 11 a.m. at Riverside Cemetery, 3607 Pearl Road, Cleveland. A military graveside service will be held.
