Helen Icie Benko, 92, Loved Playing the Piano

Helen Icie Benko (nee: Shelt), 92 years of age, and a resident of Elyria, passed away Monday, May 30, 2005 at EMH Regional Medical Center in Elyria following a sudden illness.

She was born June 5, 1912 in Canton where she was raised. She has been a resident of Elyria for the past fifty-five years.

While living in Canton, she was employed by Timkin Roller Bearing. After moving to Elyria, she worked at Moen, inc. in Elyria for thirty years retiring in 1977 as a machine operator. Helen loved playing the piano.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Laura Benko of Elyria; her daughters Barbara Whitmer of Cherry Valley, California, Maxine Wise of Wooster, Ohio and Pat and her husband Gary Scarbough of Amherst; seven grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren and her former husband, Michael Benko, Sr. of Elyria.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wayne H. and Sara Shelt (nee: Smith); by her brothers Lowell Shelt, and Richard Shelt: and by her sisters Dawn Shelt and Blanche Summers.

Friends may call Wednesday, June 1, 2005 from 7 to 9 p.m. and Thursday from 10 a.m. to the time of service at 11 a..m. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Avenue, Amherst. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
