Helen Zawasky, 89
Helen Zawasky, (nee Zehel), age 89, of Lorain, died Friday June 3, 2005 at Autumn Aegis Nursing Center in Lorain. Mrs. Zawasky was born January 13, 1916 in Lemont Furnace, Pennsylvania and had been a resident of Lorain since her childhood. She was a 1934 graduate of Clearview High School.Helen was employed in the cafeteria services department of the Lorain Board of Education; during her fifteen year career with the school system, she fulfilled assignments at Hawthorne Middle School as well as Lorain High School.
She was an active parishioner and volunteer at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Lorain, where she sang in the choir and was a former member of its Altar & Rosary Society. She also served as a member of the Nativity Parish School Parent-Teacher Organization while her children were in attendance there.
Mrs. Zawasky was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Casmir Pulaski Post # 38 of the Polish Legion of American Veterans as well as the Lorain Senior Center. She was also a member of the American Slovak Club where she worked during the weekly fish fries following her retirement from the Lorain Schools.
Her hobbies included all types of volunteer work, crocheting, and both flower and vegetable gardening.
Survivors include a son Joseph K. Zawasky residing in Sarasota, Florida, daughters Jeanette Holp of Amherst and Kathleen Holiday of Lorain, ten grandchildren, six great grandchildren, a brother John Zehel, Jr, residing in Madison Heights, Michigan, and a sister Mary Whitaker of Lorain.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband Joseph in 2000, by her parents John Zehel, Sr. and Anna (Nee Kregosky) Zehel, by a brother William Zehel, and by sisters Victoria Deba, Josephine Doman, Ann Tomasic, and Lydia Puzjack.
Friends may call Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel - 3224 Broadway - Lorain. Funeral services will be Wednesday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by the celebration of her funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church - 1454 Lexington Avenue - Lorain. The Reverend Robert Glepko, pastor of Nativity Parish will officate assisted by Reverend Mr. Robert Dybo, permanent deacon of the church. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery - Lorain.
