William Campbell, 88, Veteran of the U.S. Army - Served during WWII

Photo of William Campbell William Reynold Campbell, age 88, of Vermilion, died Tuesday, June 7, 2005 in Specialty Hospital of Lorain.

He was born on September 27, 1916 in Tarentum, PA where he had lived most of his life.He graduated from Tarentum High School in 1934. He had also lived in Ford City, PA before moving to Vermilion in 2000.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII. He served as Platoon Sergeant in the anti-tank company of the 242nd infantry regiment "Rainbow Division". His battalion received a Presidential Citation for defending the town of Hatten during the battle of the Bulge.

He was a former member of Faith Lutheran Church in Natrona Heights, PA. He was a life member of the Eureka Hose Company and the Elks Lodge #644. He was a charter member of the VFW post 5758, the VFW Barbershop Chorus, the Tarentum Fire Department drum and bugle corp., and the Taretum American Legion. He was a volunteer Fireman and served as past president of the Tarentum Fire Department and Treasurer of the Tarentum Volunteer Firemen's Relief Association.

Mr. Campbell worked as a foreman for PPG Industries, Creighton, PA and retired in 1978 after 45 years. He enjoyed Christmas decorating, building replica model trains, gardening, music, bird watching, politics, gourmet cooking, and woodworking.

Survivors include 4 daughters: Elaine (James) Campbell Psarras of Shaker Heights, Eloise Campbell of Mentor, Elyse (William) Ferber of Amherst, and Ellen (Jonathan) Lunz of Ford City, PA, and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Arnold Campbell in 1991; parents, Edward King Campbell and Pauline (nee Pilston) Campbell, a grandson, Andrew Psarras in 2004; 5 brothers, Edwin, Ken, Russell, Edward, and Howard Campbell; 4 sisters. Pauline Artman, Louise Seitz, Margaret Vetter and Jean Fleischman.

Friends may call Wednesday, June 8, 2005 from 4 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 7 p.m. at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South St. Vermilion, OH 44089. The Reverend Terry Parker, pastor and Vicar Rob Schmidt will be co-officiating, from Trinity Lutheran Church in Vermilion.

Friends also may call on Thursday, June 9, 2005 from 7 to 9 pm at the Duster Funeral Home 347 East Tenth Ave. Tarentum PA 15084. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 10th at 11 am at the Duster Funeral home followed by interment in the Mount Airy Cemetery, Natrona Heights, PA.
