Rudolph S. ''Rudy'' Mavar, 87, USPS Letter Carrier

Rudolph S. "Rudy" Mavar 87 of Lorain died Wednesday, June 22, 2005 in Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center, Lorain following a Lengthy illness.

He was born December 10, 1917 in Mariana, Pennsylvania. He came to Lorain in 1947.

Mr. Mavar retired from the United States Post Office as a Letter Carrier in 1976. He worked there for 30 years.

He served in the Army World War II with the 707th Tank Battalion in the Battles of Ardennes Forest During the Battle of the Bulge and Huergten Forest in the European Theater of war. He was taken as a Prisoner of War and decorated with a Purple Heart.

Mr. Mavar was a member of Saint John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Lorain, and the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch 583 Lorain. He was also a member of the AMVETS Post 47 Lorain and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 20, Lorain. He bowled with the Charnicki Club Lorain and enjoyed watching football and baseball.

Among the survivors are his wife of 60 years Stella A. Mavar (nee Hashier) of Lorain a son Gary Mavar of Lorain; a brother Joseph Mavar of Willoughby Hills and a sister Pauline Mercuri of Willowick.

He was preceded in death by his parents Steven and Catherine (nee Doric) Mavar; brothers John, Andrew and Tony Mavar and a sister Mary Senzock.

Friends may call Friday, June 24, 2005, from 3:00 to 5:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM at the Richard J. Reidy Funeral Home, 1783 East 31st Street, South Lorain, Ohio. Funeral services will be Saturday with closing prayers in the funeral home at 9:30 AM and Funeral Mass in Saint John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Homewood Drive and Grove Avenue, Lorain. The Reverend Thomas R. Smith Pastor will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain Ohio. Where the Disabled American Veterans, Louis Paul Proy, Chapter 20, Lorain will conduct military honors.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Saint John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, 2143 Homewood Drive, Lorain, Ohio 44055.
