Ernest John Papay, 73, Served in the US Marine Corp.

Ernest John Papay, 73 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Monday, June 27, 2005 at Ohio Extended Care in Lorain following a lengthy illness.

He was born October 19, 1931 in Elyria where he was raised and graduated from Elyria High School with the class of 1950. He was a resident of South Amherst for thirty years before moving to Amherst twenty-two years ago.

He served in the US Marine Corp. during the Korean Conflict as a sergarent with support Battalion 2DC. Ernest was employed as a sheet metal worker with the Vermilion Local 33 for forty-five years, retiring in 1991.

He was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church in Elyria, where he was active in the Holy Names Socitey aand served as a Boy Scout Leader with the Church's Troop. He was also a member of the Amherst Veterans of Forgein Wars Post #1662 and their golf league; the Amherst American Legion Post #197; and the Amherst Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie #1442 and their golf and bowling leagues.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-two years Dorothy Mary Papay (nee: Kangas); his son Joseph Scott Papay of Amherst; his daughter Mary Congelio of Amherst; two grandchildren; his brothers Frank Papay of Elyria and Gilbert Papayof Sylvania, Ohio; and his sister Mary Ann Stillwell of Oberlin.

He was preceded in death by his parents William, Sr. and Mary Papay (nee: Stumphauzer); and by his brother William Papay, Jr.

Friends may call Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Closing prayers will be held Friday at 9:00 a.m. from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:00 a.m. from St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church; 41295 North Ridge Rd., Elyria. The Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard will be performing honors. The Rev. Fr. James Ols, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Amherst.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Vincent DePaul Catholic Church - 41295 North Ridge Rd., Elyria, 44035; the Alzheimer's Association - 12200 Fairhill Rd, Celeveland 44120; or CHP Regional Foundation/New Life Hospice - 3700 Kolbe Rd., Lorain 44053.
