Joseph V. Stumphauzer, 93, Former Bricklayer for T.J. Hume Construction

Photo of Joseph V. Stumphauzer Joseph V. Stumphauzer, age 93, of Lorain, died Monday July 4, 2005 at the Hearthstone at Lorain following an extended illness.

Mr. Stumphauzer was born October 28, 1911 in Saskatchewan, Canada and had been a resident of the United States since the age of five. He had been a citizen of Lorain since 1955 moving from Avon.

A member of Lorain County Bricklayer’s Local # 34, he was employed as a bricklayer for the United States Steel Corporation for thirteen years and later in the same capacity for the T.J. Hume Construction Company; he retired from that trade in 1976.

Joe was parishioner of Saint Ladislaus Catholic Church in Lorain where he was also a member of the Holy Name Society. He had previously attended Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Avon as well as Saint Stanislaus Catholic Church in Lorain.

Mr. Stumphauzer was an accomplished rose gardener who maintained more than three hundred rose bushes at his Lorain home; he also had been retained by the Jackson-Perkins Company to conduct climatic and growing tests on various species of roses that they planned to introduce to the general public.

A member of the American Bowling Congress and the Lorain Bowling Association, he was also an avid bowler who participated extensively in league competition throughout the city.

Survivors include his son Joseph S. Stumphauzer of Amherst, daughters Mary Ann Burger and Jane Pope both residing in Lorain, nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, brothers Frank of Lorain, and Jesse of Avon, along with a sister Margaret Cook of Avon.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Yolanda (nee Chaszar) in 2004, by a grandson: Daniel in 1996, by his parents Stephen and Mary (nee Schaufert) Stumphauzer, by brothers Stephen, William, and John, and by sisters: Alice Puskas, Helen Pandy, Mary Papay, and Irene Androzzio.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway – Lorain. Funeral services will be Thursday beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by the celebration of his funeral mass at 1:00 a.m. in Saint Ladislaus Catholic Church – East 29th Street and Wood Avenue – Lorain. The Reverend James Ols, pastor of Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Elyria Township will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery – Lorain.
