Peter S. Mazzee, 81
Peter S. Mazze, age 81, of Lorain, died Tuesday August 23, 2005 in the emergency room of Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center.He was born September 25, 1923 in Lorain and had been a life-long resident of the city.
Mr. Mazze was a graduate of Lorain High School; he went on to serve as a rifleman assigned to the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II . He fulfilled duty assignments throughout the European Theater and participated in battle campaigns in Normandy, northern France, and the Rhineland. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during combat; he was also the recipient of the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Ribbon with three Bronze Stars, the Combat Infantry Badge, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal.
Peter later secured employment with the United States Steel Corporation and served as a metallurgical laboratory technician in the B.O.P. Shop at its Lorain-Cuyahoga Works. He retired from that post in 1984 following almost forty years of service with the steel producer.
He was a life member of both Italian-American Veterans Post # 1 of Lorain and Louis Paul Proy Chapter # 20 of the Disabled American Veterans. He was previously active as a member of the Sheffield Lions Club as well as Lt.James McManus Council # 637 of the Knights of Columbus.
A parishioner of the Catholic Church of Saint Peter in Lorain, he was a regular volunteer at the annual spaghetti dinner there and also assisted in the monthly spaghetti dinners sanctioned by the Italian-American Veterans Club.
His hobbies included golf and woodworking. He also enjoyed crafting stained glass.
Mr. Mazze is survived sons John of Amherst, Jeffrey and Jack both of Lorain, daughter Lynn Mazze-Trunkett residing in Lorain, five grandchildren, and a sister Rose Carver of Lorain.
He was preceded in death by his wife: Louise (nee Taddeo) in 1993, by his parents John and Nancy (nee Caruso) Mazze, and a brother Louis in 1975.
Visitation will be Friday, August 26, 2005, from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel 3224 Broadway Avenue Lorain where a memorial service will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. by officers and member of Italian-American Veterans Post # 1. Funeral services will be Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by the celebration of his funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in the Catholic Church of Saint Peter 3501 Oberlin Avenue Lorain. The Reverend Kenneth Wolnowski, pastor of the parish will preside. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery - Lorain where full military honors will be conducted by the Italian-American Veterans Post # 1 honor guard.
