Leroy Royal, 81, Active In All Activities At Saint John Church

Leroy Royal, age 81, of Lorain, died Wednesday August 24, 2005 in the emergency room of Community Health Partners Hospital and Surgical Center following an extended illness.

Mr. Royal was born in Greenup, Kentucky on January 20, 1924 and had been a long-time resident of Lorain.

He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

He was employed for many years in the maintenance department of the Lorain City Schools. He had previously been employed as a maintenance supervisor for Saint John Roman Catholic Church in Lorain.

He was an active parishioner on Saint John Roman Catholic Church and was privileged to have drawn the second shovel of dirt at the groundbreaking for the current church complex in 1967. He was also a member of the church’s Holy Name Society.

His hobbies included gardening, fishing, and grilling for his family. He also received great enjoyment out of volunteering at church functions.

Survivors include his daughter Karoline Yates of Lorain, a son George Yates of Terrell, Texas, and a grandson Aaron Yates of Lorain.

He was preceded in death b y his wife Mildred (nee Biber) in April of this year, by his parents John and Hattie (nee Knapp) Royal, by sisters Opal Gregory and Lorraine Yates, and by brothers George and Carl Royal.

Friends may call Sunday, August 28, 2005, from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway Avenue – Lorain where a rosary service will be conducted by officers and members of the Saint John Holy Name Society at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be Monday beginning at 9:30 in the funeral chapel and will be followed by the celebration of his funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in Saint John Roman Catholic Church – 2143 Homewood Drive at Grove. The Reverend Thomas R. Smith, pastor of Saint John Parish will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery – Lorain.
