George H. Siss, 81, WWII Army Veteran

George H. Siss, 81, of Lorain, died Friday August 26, 2005 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain after a short illness.

He was born May 5, 1924 in Cleveland, Ohio and had resided in Lorain since 1950.

George served with the US Army during World War II as a sharpshooter and military police man and saw action in North Africa and in the Mt. Casino invasion in Salerno. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, World War II Victory Medal, Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and the American Theater Ribbon.

George worked as a painter at Freuhauf Trailer in Avon Lake, Thew Shovel in Lorain and at the Lorain Ford Assembly Plant. Later he worked as a machinist at ADI in Sheffield Village before retiring.

He was a member of VFW Post #451 in Lorain, Lorain Masonic Lodge and the Beaver Creek Shooting Club. He had been active with Boy Scout Troop #330 and enjoyed fishing, hunting, photography, traveling, skeet shooting and reading. He had a pet dog his entire life.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years Harriet (nee Burdue), sons George H. Siss III and Jerry L. Siss, both of Lorain, daughter Karen Carney of Lorain and son Bill Siss of Lorain, sisters Helen Jacobs of Cleveland, Rita Bellido of Berea, Doris Struhar of Lexington, Kentucky and Marie Siss of Berea, brother Lenny Siss of Berea, 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents George H. and Helen (nee Eltrich) Siss, brother Richard Siss and sister Ordell Stevonski.

The family will receive friends Monday, August 29, 200,5 from 4-8 PM at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain where funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 AM. The Rev. Stephen Sedgewick, pastor of Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Lorain, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst Township where VFW Post #451 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
