James Calvin McGarvey, 70, Enjoyed Traveling

James Calvin McGarvey, 70 years of age, and a resident of South Amherst, passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2005 at his home following a lengthy illness.

He was born February 16, 1935 in Irvona, Pennsylvania where he was raised. South Amherst has been his home for the last thirty-nine years.

He was employed by the General Motors Fisher Body Plant in Elyria for thirty-two years retiring in 1986 from the painting department. While living in Pennsylvania, he was a member of the Methodist Church. James was an active member of Old Fashioned Grace Baptist Church in South Amherst. He enjoyed spending time with is family, reading his Bible and cooking. After retiring, he also enjoyed traveling with the retirees from the United Auto Workers Union of which he was a member.

Survivors include his wife of forty years, Juanita McGarvey (nee: West) his daughters Cherie Brestovansky of Lorain, Margie Carrender and Minnie Gayheart, both of Somerset, Kentucky; eleven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and his sisters, Betty Brantiff of Pennsylvania, Annabelle Tracy of Maryland and Alice Kusman of Wickliff, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his son, James Maurice McGarvey on January 2, 2000 and by his parents, Maurice Daniel and Bell McGarvey (nee: Potts).

Friends may call Friday, September 9, 2005 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Avenue, Amherst. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 10, 2005 at 11 a.m. from Old Fashioned Grace Baptist Church; 500 West Main Street, South Amherst. The Rev. Farrell Keith, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst.
