John A. Mosley, 78, Enjoyed Golf

John A. Mosley, age 78, of Vermilion, died Sunday, September 11, 2005 at New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph after a brief illness.

He was born on August 20, 1927 in Denver, Colorado and has been a Vermilion resident for the past 38 years.

He was a United States Army Veteran serving two tours of duty from 1946–1947 and as 1st Lieutenant during the Korean Conflict from 1952–1953.

He was raised and attended school in Columbia, Tennessee, graduating from Columbia High School, where he played football and was in the band. He graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.

As an engineer, he worked for 18 years for Clevite Corporation in Cleveland and managed their plant in Caldwell, Ohio. He later joined Airborne Manufacturing Company in Elyria where he spent 12 years and became vice-president. He also served as an arbitrator for the Cleveland Better Business Bureau for 20 years, twice named Arbitrator of the Year. He was a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and served as the area representative for Carnegie-Mellon University.

He served as president of the Noble County Recreation Committee and was instrumental in the construction of the first swimming pool and recreation complex in the county. He was an active member of the Vermilion Rotary and its various social projects, particularly working with the STRIVE program at Firelands High School, as a volunteer tutor at the Vermilion South Street
School and in writing its weekly newsletter. He served the Vermilion High School Speech and Debate Club as a debate judge throughout the North Coast District. He was recognized with the National Forensic League Chapter Service Award as well as the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce Special Recognition Award for his work with the schools and youth. He served as past-president for the Vermilion Planning Commission and the Crystal Shores Homeowners Association. He was an active blood donor, enjoyed golf, bridge, reading, traveling and was an avid Cleveland Browns fan.


He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dianne (nee Stitt) Mosley; daughters, Marcia (Thomas) Geary of Amherst and Wendy Burley of Huachuca City, AZ; son, Wayne (Terri) Mosley of Strongsville; grandchildren, Erik & Kevin Mosley, Benjamin & Elizabeth Geary, John Michael and David Burley and Sarah Burley Boone; and one great granddaughter, Bodhi; several nieces and
nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Lois (nee Leonard) Mosley and brothers, Herbert and James.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 15, 2005 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the Riddle Funeral Home, 5345 South Street, Vermilion, Ohio, where the Vermilion Veteran’s Council will give military honors at 7:00pm.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 17, 2005 at 11 am at the Christ Episcopal Church, 120 Ohio Street, Huron.
