Frank A. Paulakonis, 89, 1990 Holy Name Parish Man Of The Year

Frank A. Paulakonis, age 89, of Lorain, died Wednesday September 14, 2005 at Autumn Aegis Care Center following a brief illness.

Mr. Paulikonis was born October 3, 1915 in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania and had been a resident of Lorain for more than fifty years.

He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran who fulfilled duty assignments with both the infantry and combat engineers in Europe.

Mr. Paulakonis was employed as a scarfer for the United States Steel Corporation at the company’s Lorain-Cuyahoga Works. He retired in 1977 following thirty years of service with the steel producer.

He was an active parishioner of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Lorain where he was a member of the Holy Name Society and was also acknowledged as Holy Name Parish Man of the Year in 1990. Following his retirement, he was a familiar face around the church complex assisting in maintenance, grounds-keeping, and any other tasks that needed to be addressed..

Frank was also a member of the American Slovak Club of Lorain, the Jednota Fraternal Lodge, and United Steelworkers Local # 1104. He was also a bowling enthusiast.

Survivors include his wife of forty-seven years Margaret (nee Zuffa), a son Joe residing in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, a daughter Mary Dembek residing in Franklin, Tennessee, seven grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Irene Lumby in 1990, by his parents Charles and Josephine Polukanis (derivation of spelling), by brothers Leo, Henry, and Walter, as well as sisters Lucy and Veronica.

Friends may call Friday, September 16, 2005, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway Avenue – Lorain where a rosary service will be conducted by officers and members of the Holy Trinity Holy Name Society at 7:30 p.m.. Funeral services will be Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel and will be followed by the celebration of his funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. in Holy Trinity Church – 2428 Elyria Avenue – Lorain. The Reverend David A. Novak, pastor of Holy Trinity parish will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery – Lorain.
